When it comes to publishing, the most important thing to me is . . .

Signing a contract with a big name publisher who will print, publish, and sell my book through booksellers and other retailers while I collect checks from my royalties.

The freedom to own the publishing process from start to finish and have 100% control of my royalties and sales.

The convenience of printing my niche-based book on demand because I am not interested in reaching large or mass audiences in bookstores.

If I had to define what success looks like for publishing, it would be:

Getting an advance (payment) to write my book and working with a publisher who has the systems, visibility, and the financial clout to make my book a bestseller.

Being able to proudly write, market, and sell my book on my own. I don’t mind the grind of getting my book out there independently as long as I have control over where and how the book is distributed.

Not paying a ton of money out of pocket to have copies of my book sitting in my basement or garage. I want to sit back, relax, and allow someone else to handle book orders as they pour in.

Having a team help me write and design my book while I still have ownership of all my book’s rights and royalties.

Being able to comfortably share aspects of publishing with a publisher so I can have enough space and freedom to focus more on the writing process while still enjoying royalties.

As an individual, I would describe my working style as:

Hands-off; I like to be managed by others to keep me on deadline and on track with my goals and projects.

Independent; I like to do things on my own with minimal interference from others unless there is a task I absolutely cannot do on my own due to a lack of time, skill, or desire.

Delegator; I like to pass tasks on to others if it has the potential to disrupt my flow of getting things done.

Investor; I don’t mind investing in the resources to make sure that a task is completed. I don’t mind being involved as long as I get to own the final product.

Collaborative; I want to have other trusted experts partner with me in the funding and tasks involved in the process.

What scares you the most about the publishing process?

Not understanding the contract that I sign with a publisher; I fear they will cheat me out of royalties or take the publishing and distribution rights to my book.

Developing and marketing the book all on my own without help. I fear the book won’t appear to have the best quality or that others won’t want to buy it from little ol’ me.

Having to sell my book at a higher price because the cost to print on demand is expensive. I fear not being able to access my list of buyers when my books are sold and not being able to have my books sold in bookstores because it is not coming from a “reputable” publisher.

Working with a company that does not do a good job of helping me get my book together after I pay them upfront.

Becoming overwhelmed with the process of working with a publisher and having to pay for everything on my own.

What excites you the most about the publishing process?

Not having to do anything except be the writer while others take the reigns of the publishing process!

The opportunity to author my own titles and build a source of income that is 100% mine through book sales.

Not having to personally print or send a book because someone else is handling the orders and delivery process.

Being able to invest into a proven creative team that can assist me in getting my book written and designed.

Using a “hybrid” model to reap the benefits of a traditional publisher while still having the flexibility of a self-published author.

If you could know the absolute truth to one question, what question would it be?

How realistic would it be for me to acquire a book deal?

How expensive is it to self-publish a book on my own?

Is there a way to sell and ship books without me physically having to do it myself?

Are there companies that help you write and design your book without taking a cut of your royalties or owning your publishing rights?

Is there a way for me to collaborate with a publisher to share the costs and revenue of my book?

Getting my book on the New York Times bestseller list with the help and backing of a major publisher.

Being able to sell over 100,000 books from the back of my truck (or website) and build a literary empire.
